      Reprojections  - Solo Installation Columbia MFA Thesis Exhibition, 2011 Fisher Landau Center for Art Long Island City, NY    The works in  Reprojections  examine the act of painting in relation to the mechanism of language. The gesture of approaching a metaphor in an illustrative manner, giving it a literal interpretation, kills the metaphor, thus making it dysfunctional. In language - as Lacan's "The word kills the thing" suggests - giving an object a name fixes its meaning, a limited partial signifier that will never successfully cover its referent. The works in this show refer to the Narcissist as a personality trait, a stage of development and a pathology through the scope of Lacanian psychoanalysis.  As Rosalind Krauss articulated in "Video: The Aesthetics of Narcissism" (1976), the narcissistic subject projects his own reflection back onto himself. It is the analytic mode, the conversation (or monologue) in the psychoanalytic session that exposes the narcissistic reprojection. There, it is the silence of the analyst that creates a void. Into this void the patient projects his own recitation, which Lacan calls "the monumental construct of his narcissism". It is this silence that exposes the patient to his own frustration, his inability to coincide with his object of desire.
